The Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine is a postgraduate research institute, physically located at the base of Table Mountain within the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Our research efforts are focused on infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, and non-communicable diseases prevalent in Africa.
The IIDMM has a modern, consolidated and vibrant environment of shared laboratories, facilities and expertise in which scientific excellence is pursued.
Our strategic intent is the focused application of our extensive array of scientific and research skills and capacities, within a multi-disciplinary environment extending from the most basic research to clinical studies and public health approaches, in order to address South Africa's (and Africa's) most pressing health needs.
It is important to us that our work is translational - that our discoveries and pursuits are taken from our laboratories and applied in our communities.
The IIDMM consists of 25 Full and 15 Associate Members, with 12 Affiliate and 7 Adjunct Members, details of whom are included within this site. There are over 140 research officers, technical and administrative support staff employed at the IIDMM, principally on externally-sourced funding; 147 Masters and PhD students registered with Institute Members; and 47 Postdoctoral Fellows.
We are supported institutionally by our Director, Prof Valerie Mizrahi, and a prestigious International Scientific Advisory Board which meets every 2-3 years to advise on research strategy.
